Common Vision Conditions.
Information on a variety of conditions.
There are many states and conditions that an eye may assume that are considered "defective" in nature. Blurred vision, nearsightedness, farsightedness, etc. are all examples of ocular defects that affect proper vision.
In order to help you better understand the treatments that the Arrowsmith Eye Institute implements in order to correct vision problems, we offer the following animations to illustrate the most common visual defects:

Ever wonder how your eye works?
This animation illustrates the operation of the normal eye.An image begins as rays of light reflected by an object. The light enters the eye through the clear, dome-shaped cornea, passes through the pupil, and travels through the lens of the eye and is then focused on the specialized nerve cells of the retina. These cells convert the light to electrical signals and sends them to the brain which interprets these signals as vision. |

Nearsightedness aflicts those who cannot see objects far away.
This animation shows the topography of the eye and how it is related to nearsightedness. Nearsightedness, or the inability to see things unless they are near, can occur when the cornea has too steep a curve. This can cause the light to focus in front of the retina instead of on it. Nearsightedness can also occur if the eye is to long in relation to the curvature of the cornea.

People who are farsighted can have difficulty seeing objects both at a distance and close up without corrective lenses.
Farsightedness can occur if the cornea is too flat or the eye is too short. People who are farsighted can have difficulty seeing objects both at a distance and close up without corrective lenses. |

Astigmatism is caused by an irregular curvature in the cornea, causing light to focus at two different points within the eye.
Both nearsightedness and astigmatism result in objects appearing blurred and indistinct unless very near to the viewer, hence the term "near-sighted." Ordinarily, the focal point of light entering the eye is temporarily corrected with lenses - so that a clear, sharp picture is formed on the retina and transmitted to the brain. RK and Astigmatic Keratotomy are surgical procedures designed to change the focal point permanantly. |

A cataract is a clouding of the normally clear lens of the eye.
This clouding is usually the result of aging, but some very young patients develop cataracts for different reasons. This animation shows a cataract in action and how it affects your vision.
A cataract is a clouding of the normally clear lens of the eye. This clouding is usually the result of aging, but some very young patients develop cataracts for different reasons. Injuries, certain diseases, and some medications may cause cataracts. Cataracts prevent light from passing through the lens to the back of the eye, or retina. Much like the lens of a camera focuses light on the camera's film, the lens of your eye focuses light on the eye's retina. If the front of your camera's lens becomes dirty or fogged, then the picture taken will be hazy or blurred. A cataract causes light focusing on the retina of your eye to be blurred in a similar manner. |
