Chief Technician Amber has recently received the designation of Certified Ophthalmic
Assistant, (COA), by the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology, (JCAHPO).
She has been employed at Arrowsmith Eye Institute a little over two years. To attain this
designation, she rigorously studied over several months and took a comprehensive written exam.
This certification allows patients and Dr. Arrowsmith to realize she has achieved an identifiable
level of expertise in her chosen profession. By the way, Amber is also a recent newlywed!

The Eye Research Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization affiliated with Arrowsmith Eye Institute
has been awarded a $10,000 grant from Baptist Healing Trust to help support their Subsidy Assistance
Program. Executive Director Stephen J. Molnar, Jr. set up the program to help provide funds for
needy patients who were previously unable to have cataract surgery solely due to their inability
to afford the procedure or in the case of their not having adequate health insurance. This program
was instituted in 2007 and has assisted numerous people improve their quality of life, also making
it possible for many to get their jobs back since they are now able to see. All donations to the

Courtney, Ophthalmic Technician at Arrowsmith Eye Institute, graduated from Volunteer
State Community College with an Associated Degree in Ophthalmic Medical Technology.
She has been with Arrowsmith Eye Institute for a little over a year. After many hours
of hard work and studying, she recently passed her Certified Ophthalmic Assistant exam on
October 27, 2008. This is a great accomplishment for her and she hopes to continue with
her education. She has the designation of Certified Ophthalmic Assistant, COA.

Carolyn has been working to meet the requirements of being accepted into a Nursing
program for several semesters. She was accepted to Aquinas Nursing College in August 2008.
Since then, she has adjusted many aspects of her life to balance her work, school and family.
She enjoys helping people and loves working with her patients. If all goes as planned, she
will receive her nursing degree in May 2010.

Dr. Arrowsmith, along with Courtney, Amber and Thor
attended the 7 day annual conference of the
American Academy of Ophthalmology
held this year
in Atlanta. Over 15,000 professionals including both ophthalmologists and their staff were
in attendance. While there, they received required Continuing Education Credits through
educational seminars in order to maintain their designations. Also, they visited with many
suppliers in the field of ophthalmology to see what is available for patient care now as well
as in the future. Dr. Arrowsmith was involved with seminars relating to the
Intralase Bladeless
flap laser, the WaveLight Allegretto Wave Excimer Laser,
as well as meeting with representatives
from the
Carl Zeiss Co.
who manufactures the IOL Master, used for fine tuning a patient’s
examination results prior to cataract surgery.
