What Should I Expect On My First Visit?

Once in the examining room, a professionally trained ophthalmic technician/nurse will first record a medical history that will include the eye problems which may have prompted your visit as well as any general medical illnesses and medications you may be taking. Using that information, the technician/nurse can administer several tests and give you eye drops as needed, in accordance with the doctor's instructions.

Not all patients require eye drops, but dilation of the pupil frequently is necessary - even with a routine check-up - in order to detect many eye problems and diseases. In addition, eyedrops make the measurements for eyeglasses much more accurate. If you receive eye drops, you will be asked to wait 20 to 45 minutes before the doctor can see you. This is necessary to allow the drops sufficient time to take effect.

After this waiting period, the doctor will review all the information at hand and fully examine your eyes, performing a number of important tests. Each test may identify or rule out the presence of anywhere from a dozen to several hundred different diseases. The examination altogether includes:

  • Measurement of visual acuity
  • Refraction or measurement of the optical system of the eye to determine whether eyeglasses are needed
  • Examination of the lids and the orbits
  • Testing of the eye muscle movements in various directions of gaze and testing for crossing eyes
  • Testing the pupil reactions and visual fields
  • Glaucoma testing
  • Testing for cataracts
  • Microscopic examination of the cornea, iris and lens
  • Examination of the retina, blood vessels, and optic nerve

At the conclusion of your examination, the doctor will talk with you about his/her findings and make any necessary recommendations.

Your Eye Exam.

As part of your surgical work-up, you'll receive a comprehensive dilated eye examination by one of our doctors and other special testing to help us confirm your procedure for vision correction surgery.

Special Testing.

To help insure the success of your procedure, special testing procedures such as our computerized corneal topography will be performed. This topographical mapping of the front surface of your eye is painless and gives us the necessary measurements and information to achieve the best possible results.

Your LASIK Procedure.

Using cool waves of light from an Excimer Laser, LASIK takes only a few minutes to treat Nearsightedness, Farsightedness, and Astigmatism with microscopic precision. You should experience little if any discomfort.
